Russia-Ukraine war latest updates: Kyiv set to receive Leopard 2, Abrams tanks

Berlin on Wednesday announced plans to send German-made Leopard 2 main battle tanks to Ukraine, following weeks of international pressure.

Germany will send 14 tanks from its own military stocks and begin training Ukrainian forces in Germany. The package will also include logistics, ammunition and system maintenance support, the government said, adding it would also “issue the appropriate transfer permits” enabling other European nations to re-export their Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine. NATO members welcomed the news.

It comes as U.S. officials say the Biden administration will also provide M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine, despite previous concerns that they might require too much training and maintenance for Ukrainian forces. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Wednesday condemned the plans as a “deep delusion,” quipping that “American Abrams tanks burn like all the others, only they are expensive.”

Here’s the latest on the war and its ripple effects across the globe.

Berlin had long resisted calls to send tanks without acting in tandem with allies, saying that it did not want to be seen as a direct participant in the war, inviting retaliation potential from Russia. In recent weeks, German officials had been more explicit in linking any decision to send tanks to a similar move by the United States.

But intense international pressure — and an apparent reversal of Washington’s position on sending its battle tanks — appears to have provided impetus.

Poland and a number of other European members of NATO have indicated they are prepared to send Leopard 2s. Finland, Greece, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey all own at least 100 of them.
